Soda Bread 

Hot soda with the butter dripping off it down our chins for breakfast – no taste will ever come near!! However if you want to save yourself a bellyache – let the soda cool down first!  

Ingredients: 

 

Heaped cup of soda bread flour* 

Level cup of buttermilk 

 

*1lb plain flour, 1tsp salt, 1tsp baking soda 

Method: 

 

  • Preheat oven to 180 
  • Mix together all above to form a soft dough 
  • Turn out onto a floured surface and knead lightly before shaping into a round approx 9-10 inches 
  • Place on a lightly floured baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven for 25-35 miutes until hollow sounding when tapped. 

Variations: 

 

Add these flavours to the flour before the buttermilk 

  • Chopped olives 
  • Grated cheese and chopped chives 
  • Sundried tomatoes 
  • Raisins and sultanas, sugar 
  • Mixed spices 
  • Curry powder 
  • Coconut 

 

Add these flavours to the buttermilk before mixing with flour 

  • Basil pesto 
  • Sundried tomato paste 
  • Chilli tomato paste 
  • Curry paste
